LETTERS FROM THE DESK

CHAIRMAN’S VISION – Shri Samir Somaiya

Our Founder, Padmabhushan Shri K. J. Somaiya was deeply influenced by Gandhiji, and dedicated himself to nation building. He founded Somaiya Vidyavihar on the 9th of September, 1959. He later went on to establish many similar institutions to make great citizens of India and the world. In the words of Swami Vivekananda, “We want that education by which character is formed, strength of mind is increased, the intellect expanded, and by which one can stand on one’s own feet.” We have now grown into a multi-disciplinary and multi-campus education institution with over 1500 faculty, and 38,000 students.

Our motto is ज्ञानादेव तु केवल्यम्। Knowledge alone liberates. Liberates from poverty, from hunger, also to liberate one from the attachments that bind us to small mindedness. Knowledge also provides opportunity, to make the life lived more meaningful. In the service of one’s family, one’s community, one’s ‘samaj’, country, and indeed the world. Beating in minds that there is no religion other than the life lived in the service of humanity, न मानुषात परो धर्म ।

Our education in any subject will reflect its timeless fundamentals, its current context, and applications. There is so much scientific discovery taking place at the intersection of fields, of biology, computing, medicine, the social senses and everywhere else. We will provide students and faculty with an environment to engage this world, to discover new truths, make new applications to create and share knowledge.

Our education will also be experimental. With projects that are ‘real’ and those that complement the learning inside the classroom. Our students and faculty will be at the cutting edge of change, to incubate companies, to create NGOs, and pursue any field of their passion. Our education will also be holistic. Sports and physical exercise must be a firm part of the curriculum. For students to develop a love for sports, for recreation, for health, for teamwork, for competition. Our education will also instill an appreciation for art and culture. In the Bhagavad-Gita, Arjuna asks Krishna, “How one is to control one’s mind that is as fleeting as the wind?” Krishna responds that it can only be done through practice and discipline. वैराग्येण तु कौनतय अभ्यासेन च गृहृते। We will strive to teach our students to learn to stay calm in our turbulent world.

Also, our education will include the ancient Indian tradition, its culture, its depth and its knowledge. We must keep connection with our mother tongue and our languages. Languages are the storehouses of culture, and the loss of a language takes with it much learning, stored through it over the ages.

Finally, our education will help students lead a full life, to fall in love with life. Our dream is to build a world class research and teaching institution, that is global in the reach of its ideas, and universal in its service. Welcome to our community.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL – Dr Shweta Manwadkar

Greetings to all the readers!

It gives me immense pleasure to write for this 7th edition of Glint, the e magazine of K J Somaiya College of Physiotherapy.

This year’s theme is “This moment is all there is.” I wholeheartedly congratulate the magazine committee for coming up with such a mature theme. I feel proud that our students know the value of every moment and so they know the value of time! The wonderful cover page by our student Insiya Haidery feels like a fine fabric of many beautiful moments interwoven together depicting what College life is all about.

I feel joyous and absolutely energised listening to the ideas of magazine committee members, the amazing creations by students in the form of artwork, articles, pictures… The first edition of Glint was created seven years back with the thought of providing a creative platform to students and staff of our College to showcase their talent and thereafter it has never failed to keep that promise.  At Somaiya, we envision our students to shine not only in acedemics but also in extracurricular activities. This magazine is one such opportunity for them. It is very inspiring and fulfilling to witness excellent editions of this magazine released every year. With increased number of students and staff, the overall talent, enthusiasm and participation is increased manifold making it possible to achieve greater levels of success with every passing year.

As the Principal of this prestigious Institute, it gives me great satisfaction to see how brilliant our students and staff are! They are excellent not only in academics but also in creative expression and precise articulation of their thoughts and ideas.

I am sure that the rich content presented in all the sections of this magazine will give an enjoyable and  immersive experience to the readers. My best wishes and appreciation to all who have contributed towards making the 7th edition of Glint so much beautiful and meaningful.

With love, Shweta Manwadkar, Principal.

LETTER FROM THE EDITORS

Dear reader,
It is an absolute pleasure to welcome you to the 7th edition of Glint Magazine.

The past year witnessed our homecoming, a glorious return to college after a long time at home. We started the year with grit, determination and hearts full of dreams. Clinical postings, sports, cultural events, this year we did it all! And what better place could we have to capture everything that went on this year than the college magazine? Glint is the part of the college where our memories are stored, where our words live and our art blooms; an invisible thread tying us to this college forever.

This was the year that we realized how priceless every moment is. Every minute of hands-on practice, every hour of offline lectures, every day of experiencing college in person, on campus taught us how important it is to make the most of our time here. The theme of Glint 2022 is, “This moment is all there is”. A message to live in the moment, to seize the day, carpe diem!

Because,
“Yesterday is history,
Tomorrow is a mystery,
But today is a gift,
That’s why it is called the present”.

Because these are the best days of our lives and we deserve to live them vibrantly. Because this is the time to love, and learn, and live! For now is the time we learn to thrive, and not just survive. Now is the time we make the most of every passing moment, as we come closer to realizing our dreams.

This year’s Glint, as always, showcases the heart and soul of K J Somaiya College of Physiotherapy, and is brimming with all the things that bring us joy, and inspire us. We invite you to take a breath, and dive right in. We hope you enjoy the read.

Editors,
Dr Annamma Varghese (PT), Dr Prachi Sarvaiya (PT)
Bilwa Sawant, Ananya Gupta.
